Cannot access Windows PC in the home network.
After you build your new Windows PC, you may have tried to access that new PC from another computer in your home network. Even though everything seems to be correct you might not even be able to ping the PC.
You can run the "ipconfig" command to verify if the machine got an IP address.
C:>ipconfig
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 2:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway. . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
Try doing a ping to any other computer in the network. If you are able to ping from your machine to another machine but not vice-versa, then it may be because of the Firewall. By default on a newly installed machine, Windows turns on the Firewall. This may be a reason why you might not be able to access the PC.
Open the Windows firewall window by doing the following:
Start –> Run –> firewall.cpl
Try turning off the firewall. You can re-enable the firewall if you need later. I recommend you to turn off the firewall until you figure out what the problem is.
Now try doing a "PING" to the PC from any other machine. You should now be able to access the PC.
Now you can either leave the firewall open on your PC if you are on a home network because you will already be behind a router which keeps you safe from the outside world. If you still want to you can turn on the firewall with adding some exceptions to this.
